Studying Yoga in Mysore
Mysore, the third largest city of the southern Indian state of Karnataka, is famous for its sandalwood and silk. More recently, it has also become famous for its yoga teachers. It lies on the slope of a low-lying plateau at an altitude of 770 m, which makes its climate pleasantly cool in winter. The name Mysore is derived from Mahishasura, the demon who allegedly used to rule there. Mysore was once the home to the royal family, and the spectacular Maharajah's palace still occupies a large portion of the city centre. Home of world famous ashtanga teacher Patthabi Jois, Mysore, now sometimes referred to as "Ashtanga city", is fast becoming one of the most popular places in India to study yoga.

Astanga Yoga:
What is Mysore-style Ashtanga Yoga?
The first thing to strike you when you walk into a Mysore-style Ashtanga yoga class is that it seems like total chaos. Here's one student doing a headstand in the corner, while another is coming into the triangle posture and a third is struggling to balance on her arms. What is going on here? If you stay a while and watch closely, you start to notice a pattern emerging. Everyone seems to be on a path, following a precise choreography. Also, compared to other yoga classes, the silence is striking. Occasionally the teacher will whisper something to a student, but the dominant sound is the collective breath. You'll notice the teacher move swiftly from student to student, giving adjustments as appropriate. Here's a poem describing Mysore-Style classes:
In Mysore-style Ashtanga yoga Postures are given One by one By the teacher In charge.
Mysore is a city in the south of India (see map) where Ashtanga yoga has been taught by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois since the 1930's. This traditional style of Mysore has students learn postures in a fixed order using a special movement-breathing technique called vinyasa. The vinyasa links the postures together in the dance of the breath.

Yoga Teachers in Mysore :
Sri K. Pattabhi Jois :
There are many teachers of Astanga Vinyasa Yoga in Mysore. The most famous is Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. He teaches in Mysore with his grandson Sharath Rangaswami in a small shala in Lakshmipuram. Classes, Sunday to Friday,- except moon days, are " Mysore" style, that is assisted self practice in groups of 12. Classes start at 4.30 am and you go and join the queue at your specified time and wait until you are called in to the room. The atmosphere is unbelievable. A must for your first Astanga Yoga visit to Mysore. To study with Guruji costs US$ 550 for month one and US$350 for subsequent months. If you want to study with Guruji then you must first write to him or telephone to seek permission.
His details are:
Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, 876/1 First Cross, Lakshmipuram, Mysore 570004, India.
Phone: 0091 821 516756
V. Sheshadri
Another option is to study with V. Sheshadri, a student of BNS Iyengar, who teaches Astanga Vinyasa Yoga in the Renuka Charya Temple. Sheshadri follows the Primary and Intermediate series laid down by BNS Iyengar. You do the same postures as with Pattabhi Jois in the main, but the order is different in some parts of the series. You don't get the atmosphere of the Jois shala, but you get many more adjustments and lots of demonstration by Sheshadri. He promises "I will press you, one by one" and he does. Unlike Pattabhi Jois Sheshadri teaches both Indians and Westerners in the same class. Classes start at 6pm and last up to 2 hours. To study with Sheshadri costs US$100 per month and classes take place every day except moon days. His details are: -
V. Sheshadri, Door No. 1393, Renukacharya Mandira, Renuka Charya Temple Street,
K. R. Mohalla, Mysore, 570004, India.
